Funded Driving Lessons for Disabled Learners on the Isle of Wight

At Humphreys Driving School, we’re proud to support the Motability Foundation Driving Lessons Grant, helping disabled drivers in Ryde and across the Isle of Wight gain the freedom and confidence that comes with learning to drive.

If you’re a Motability Scheme customer and receive a means-tested benefit, you may be eligible for up to 40 hours of funded driving lessons through the AA Driving School network – and Humphreys Driving School is proud to be one of their trusted local instructors.


🚗 Who Can Apply for the Motability Driving Lessons Grant

You may qualify if you:

  • Have a Motability Scheme vehicle (or one arriving in the next four months)
  • Hold a provisional UK driving licence
  • Have passed your theory test
  • Receive a means-tested benefit, such as:
    • Universal Credit
    • Income Support
    • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
    • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
    • Housing Benefit or Council Tax Support
    • Pension Guarantee Credit
    • Working Tax Credit

If you already hold a full driving licence and have recently received a Motability grant for driving adaptations, you may also qualify for familiarisation lessons to help you adjust to your adapted vehicle.

Please note that the grant does not cover driving test fees, lessons for family members or carers, or non-Motability vehicles.

    • National Insurance number
    • Theory test certificate
    • Proof of your means-tested benefit

    If you qualify, the Foundation will email you a link to the secure application form.
  4. Get matched with your instructor:

How many driving lessons can I get through the grant?

If you qualify, the Motability Foundation can fund up to 40 hours of driving lessons with a local instructor.
If you already hold a full licence and have received a grant for vehicle adaptations, you may also be eligible for familiarisation lessons — usually up to five hours, or more if recommended by your instructor.


What if I haven’t passed my theory test yet?

You’ll need to pass your theory test before applying for the grant. The Motability Foundation will ask to see your certificate as part of your application.

Which benefits make me eligible for the grant?

You must be a Motability Scheme customer and receive a means-tested benefit, such as:

What costs are not covered by the grant?

The grant covers your driving lessons only. It doesn’t include:

  • Theory or practical driving test fees
  • Lessons for family members or carers
  • Vehicle adaptations outside the Motability Scheme

How long does the application process take?

The Motability Foundation aims to respond within four weeks of receiving all your documents. Once approved, AA Driving School will arrange lessons with a local instructor such as Humphreys Driving School in Ryde.


What areas do you cover?

We provide Motability driving lessons across Ryde, Sandown, Shanklin, Newport, and throughout the Isle of Wight.


Can I apply on behalf of someone else?

Yes. Appointees or guardians can apply on behalf of a Motability Scheme customer, such as a child (16+) or partner, if they meet all the eligibility criteria.


How long do I have to complete the lessons?

You’ll have 12 months from the date your grant is approved to complete your funded lessons.


What happens if I leave the Motability Scheme partway through my lessons?

Your Driving Lessons Grant is linked to your Motability Scheme agreement. If your agreement ends or is cancelled, your grant and funded lessons will stop.
