Learning to drive doesn’t have to take months. At Humphreys Driving School, we offer intensive driving courses and semi-intensive driving courses across the Isle of Wight in both manual and automatic cars. Whether you want to pass your test quickly or prefer a slightly steadier pace, highly qualified instructor Les Humphrey will help you gain the skills and confidence you need to succeed.

What is an Intensive Driving Course?

An intensive driving course condenses weeks of lessons into just a few days. This means you’ll spend longer behind the wheel each day, learning all the skills you need in a shorter time frame. It’s perfect if you:

  • Need to pass quickly for work, study, or personal reasons
  • Can commit to daily lessons over a set period
  • Learn best with regular, focused driving practice

At Humphrey’s Driving Lessons, our intensive courses are available in manual and automatic cars across the Isle of Wight, tailored to your pace and ability.

What is a Semi-Intensive Driving Course?

semi-intensive driving course spreads the same training out over a slightly longer period. You’ll still learn quickly, but with more flexibility between lessons. This option is ideal if you:

  • Want to progress faster than weekly lessons, but not all at once
  • Prefer time to reflect and practice between sessions
  • Have a busy schedule and need a more flexible approach

Semi-intensive courses are also available in manual and automatic cars with Les Humphrey as your guide.

Which Course is Right for You?

FAQs: Intensive & Semi-Intensive Courses

1: What is an intensive driving course?

An intensive course, sometimes called a “crash course,” condenses a full driving syllabus into a very short period—typically one to two weeks. You will be driving for several hours each day, with the goal of going from learner to test-ready in the shortest possible time. Your practical test is usually booked for the final day of the course.

2: What is a semi-intensive driving course?

A semi-intensive course is the perfect middle-ground. It’s much faster than traditional weekly lessons but less “all-at-once” than a full intensive.

Instead of driving 5-6 hours every day, you might spread 20-30 hours of tuition over 3 to 6 weeks. This gives you more time to digest what you’ve learned between lessons while still making rapid progress. It’s an excellent choice if you want to pass quickly but need to fit lessons around work, college, or family commitments.

3: Who are intensive courses for?

People who need to get their licence quickly (e.g., for a new job).

Individuals who learn well in a focused, high-pressure environment.

Learners who have some previous driving experience and want to “finish the job.”

Those who can dedicate a full week or two entirely to learning to drive.

They may not be the best fit for very nervous beginners, as the pace can be overwhelming.

4: Do I need to pass my theory test first?

Yes, absolutely. You cannot book a practical driving test without a valid theory test pass certificate. We strongly advise you to have your theory test passed before you book an intensive course, as we need the pass number to secure your practical test slot at the end of your course.

5: Is the practical test included in the price?

Only if we book the test for you our intensive course packages include the cost of one practical driving test booking. We will book this for you at the Newport, Isle of Wight Test Centre, aiming to schedule it for the very end of your lesson block.

6: How many hours will I need?

This is the most common question! It depends entirely on your current skill level.

Complete Beginner: You will likely need one of our 35-40 hour courses.

Some Experience: If you’ve had 10-15 hours of lessons before, our 20-25 hour courses might be perfect.

Nearly Test-Ready: Our 10-15 hour “Test Rescue” courses are designed to polish your skills and get you over the line.

We highly recommend booking an assessment lesson with us first. This lets us see you drive and give you an honest, professional recommendation for the package that’s right for you.

7: Is a pass guaranteed?

No reputable driving school can or should “guarantee” a pass, as the result is 100% down to your performance on the day.

What we do guarantee is that we will teach you all the skills and knowledge you need to pass your test and be a safe, confident driver for life. We will ensure you are driving at a test-ready standard before we take you to the test centre.

8: What happens if I fail?

It’s not the end of the world, and it happens to the best of us! If you are unsuccessful, we will work with you to create a plan. This usually involves booking a new test (you must wait 10 working days) and taking a few “top-up” lessons to focus on the areas highlighted by the examiner.
