Below you’ll find answers to the most common questions learners ask us about driving lessons on the Isle of Wight. If you have a question that isn’t covered, feel free to contact us.
🚗 About Your Lessons
1: How long is each driving lesson?
Our standard lessons are two hours long. We find this is the most effective way to learn, as it gives you enough time to get comfortable, practise new skills properly, and retain what you’ve learned without getting fatigued
2: What car will I learn in?
You will learn in a modern, dual-control car, fitted with all the necessary safety features. We offer both manual and automatic vehicles. You can choose whichever you prefer.
3: Where can you pick me up from?
We offer a flexible pick-up and drop-off service from your home, work, or college in Ryde, Newport, and many of the surrounding areas. Just let us know where is most convenient for you.
4: Can a friend or parent sit in on my lesson?
We find that students learn best with one-to-one tuition, as it allows them to fully concentrate without any added pressure. For this reason, we do not allow passengers during your lessons.
👨🏫 The Learning Process
1: Who will my instructor be?
All lessons are provided by one of our school’s co-founders, Les or Mandy Humphrey. We are a local, family-run school, and you will have the same fully-qualified, DVSA-approved instructor for all your lessons to ensure consistency and help you build confidence.
2: How many lessons will I need to pass my test?
This is different for every student. The DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) recommends an average of 45 hours of professional tuition combined with 20 hours of private practice. However, this is just an average. We will tailor your lessons to your personal learning speed and get you test-ready as efficiently as possible.
3: I’m very nervous about driving. Can you help me?
Absolutely. We specialise in helping nervous and anxious drivers. Our instructors are famously calm and patient. We will go at your pace, starting on quiet roads and building your confidence step-by-step. You can read more about our approach on our [Nervous Drivers page]
4: What will I do on my very first lesson?
Your first lesson is all about getting you comfortable and confident. We’ll start on a quiet road, where we will:
Check your provisional licence and eyesight.
Familiarise you with the car’s controls (this is called the “cockpit drill”).
Get you moving and steering the car.
Practise pulling away and stopping safely.
We go at your pace, and our goal is to make sure you end the lesson feeling positive. [Click here for more details]
💳 Booking, Payment & Policy
1: What do I need before my first driving lesson?
All you need to start is your provisional driving licence. You must bring this with you to your first lesson so we can check it. You also need to be able to read a standard car number plate from 20 metres away, so if you wear glasses or contact lenses, please remember to bring them.
2: How do I pay for my lessons?
You can pay for your lessons by bank transfer or with cash. We also offer discounts for block bookings, which is a popular way to save money on your tuition
3: What is your cancellation policy?
We kindly request a minimum of 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule a lesson. This gives us the chance to offer that slot to another student. Lessons cancelled with less than 48 hours’ notice may be charged in full.
🏆 Tests & Advanced Courses
1: Do I need to pass my theory test before starting lessons?
You don’t need to have passed your theory test to start your driving lessons. However, you must have a valid theory test certificate before you can book your practical driving test. We strongly recommend studying for it alongside your practical lessons.
2: What is the Theory Test and what does it involve?
The Theory Test is a computer-based test you must pass before you can book your practical test. It has two parts:
1. Multiple-Choice Questions: This tests your knowledge of the Highway Code and road safety.
2. Hazard Perception: This uses video clips to test your ability to spot developing hazards on the road. We highly recommend you start studying for this as soon as you begin your lessons, and we can provide advice and support to help you pass. [Click here to see videos]
3: How do I book my practical driving test?
You must book your practical test yourself via the official DVSA website. This ensures you have control over the date and time, and all your details are correct. We will advise you on when we both agree you are ready to book, and we will help you coordinate the booking with our availability
4: Do you offer intensive “crash” courses?
Yes, we offer intensive driving courses designed to get you test-ready in a short period (e.g., 1-2 weeks). These are perfect for someone who needs to pass quickly for a job. You can find more details on our [Intensive Courses page]
5: Do you offer Pass Plus courses?
Yes, we do. Pass Plus is a short course (minimum of 6 hours) taken after you pass your practical test. It’s designed to help you build experience and confidence in areas you may not have covered in your lessons, such as:
1. Motorway driving (we will go to the mainland for this)
2.Driving at night
3.All-weather driving
4.Driving on rural roads Completing the course can also earn you a discount on your car insurance.
