Your Lesson, Your Way: Manual & Automatic
Everyone learns differently, which is why I offer you the choice in East Cowes.
Automatic Driving Lessons in East Cowes
If you’re feeling particularly anxious, or simply want to get on the road with less fuss, automatic lessons are a fantastic choice. With no clutch pedal or gears to manage, you can focus all your attention on steering, road positioning, and hazard perception.
- Perfect for Nervous Drivers: Simplifies the learning process, helping to build confidence quickly.
- Modern & Simple: Learn in a modern, dual-controlled automatic car that is easy and comfortable to handle.
- Faster Progress: Many learners find they reach test standard faster in an automatic.

Manual Driving Lessons in East Cowes
Learning in a manual car gives you a skill for life. Passing your test in a manual means you’ll be licensed to drive both manual and automatic vehicles, giving you complete flexibility for future car rentals or purchases.
- The Full Licence: Gain a full, unrestricted driving licence.
- Patient Clutch Control: I specialise in teaching clutch control with patience. We’ll take it step-by-step until it becomes second nature.
- Total Control: Enjoy the full driving experience and learn how to manage the car’s power and speed effectively.

A Calm, Supportive Approach for Nervous Drivers
It is completely normal to feel worried about learning to drive. You might be anxious about busy junctions, making a mistake, or what other drivers might do. I understand this, and my entire teaching style is built around it.
At Humphreys Driving School, you will never be shouted at. You will never be pushed into a situation you don’t feel ready for.
My approach is built on patience and positive reinforcement. We start slowly. Your first lesson will be in a quiet, low-traffic area of East Cowes, perhaps around the residential streets, where you can get to know the car’s controls without any pressure. We will only move on to busier roads, like navigating the roundabout by the medical centre or the roads near the ferry terminal, when you feel 100% ready.
If you’ve had a bad experience before, we can work together to rebuild your confidence from the ground up. You are in safe hands.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1: I’m extremely anxious. Can you really help me?
Absolutely. This is my speciality. I have helped hundreds of pupils who felt the same way you do. We will go at your pace, break everything down into small, manageable steps, and build your confidence together in a calm, supportive environment.
2: How many driving lessons will I need?
Every learner is different. The DVSA recommends an average of 45 hours of professional tuition, but this can be more or less depending on your personal progress and any private practice you get. We will work at a pace that is right for you.
3: Where will my driving test be?
The only driving test centre on the Isle of Wight is in Newport. As part of your training, we will spend plenty of time practising the official test routes around Newport, so you feel familiar and confident on the day of your test.
4: What if I pass in an automatic? Can I drive a manual?
: If you pass your test in an automatic car, your licence will only permit you to drive automatic vehicles. If you pass in a manual, you are licensed to drive both. We can discuss which option is best for your long-term goals.
5: Do you offer intensive driving courses?
I primarily focus on regular weekly lessons, as this steady, consistent approach is proven to be highly effective, especially for nervous learners. It allows you to absorb information without feeling overwhelmed.
