Humphreys Driving School

Nervous Drivers

Feeling anxious about learning to drive? You are not alone. It is one of the most common feelings new learners have. At Humphrey’s Driving School, we specialise in helping nervous drivers overcome their fears in a supportive, no-pressure environment.

Our number one goal is to build your confidence at a pace that feels right for you. We will never rush you, and we promise to provide a calm, friendly, and encouraging atmosphere in every single lesson.

A Driving School That Understands

We have helped hundreds of pupils who started out feeling anxious about:

  • Busy traffic and intimidating junctions (like Coppins Bridge)
  • The fear of stalling the car or making a mistake
  • Feeling pressured or rushed by other drivers on the road
  • A previous bad experience with another instructor
  • Just a general feeling of being overwhelmed behind the wheel

We break everything down into small, simple, and manageable steps.

Our Promise to You: Patience & Confidence

We have a proven approach to helping anxious learners become safe, confident drivers.

  • We Go at Your Pace: You are in control. We will never push you into a situation you don’t feel ready for.
  • We Start Quietly: Your first lessons will be on quiet, simple roads, allowing you to get comfortable with the car’s controls before you even think about busy traffic.
  • No Shouting, Ever: We guarantee a calm and friendly instructor. There is no such thing as a “silly question” or a “stupid mistake” – it’s all part of the learning process.
  • We Build Up Slowly: From a quiet estate to a main road, and eventually to the Newport test routes, we will build your skills step-by-step, ensuring you feel confident before moving on.

Consider Our Automatic Car

For many nervous drivers, our automatic car is the perfect solution. By removing the stress of the clutch and gears, it allows you to focus all your energy on building your road awareness and confidence. You can always learn manual later if you choose.

What Our Students Say

Driving Lessons for Nervous Drivers on the Isle of Wight Humphreys Driving School

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “I had lessons with Les after having a bad experience with another driving instructor. Les listened to me and took me on. All I can say is it was the best decision I made. Les is calm, supportive, friendly, and understanding. He got my confidence back. I would 100% recommend him.” – Christina M, Ryde

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “Words can only provide a snippet of how grateful and thankful I am… I had little to no professional experience, suffered from anxiety and was extremely self conscious when first starting. Les helped me flip those feelings on their head… I truly felt the caring nature from Les and knew at all times I was in safe and experienced hands.” – Josh R, Ryde

Frequently Asked Questions for Nervous Drivers

1: I’m really worried about my very first lesson. What will we actually do?

Your first lesson is all about getting you comfortable. We will start on a very quiet, local road with no traffic or a car park. There is no pressure at all. We’ll simply get to know the car’s controls, and we’ll only start moving when you feel ready. We go at your pace.

2: I’ve had a bad experience with another instructor who shouted. How do I know you’ll be different?

We are so sorry you went through that, and it’s something we hear often. Our school is built on a “no-shouting, ever” guarantee. Both Les and Mandy hold the City & Guilds Adult Education Teacher’s Certificate, meaning we are professionally qualified in how to teach people calmly and effectively, not just in how to drive. Our testimonials from students like Christina and Josh are proof that we create a supportive, positive environment.

3: I’m terrified of busy junctions like Coppins Bridge. Will I have to drive there?

Only when you are 100% confident and ready. We build your skills in stages, starting with simple junctions and moving to roundabouts on quieter roads. You will never be pushed into a situation you’re not prepared for. By the time we do tackle Coppins Bridge, you will have all the skills and confidence you need to handle it.

4: Is it easier to learn in an automatic if I’m nervous?

Yes, for many people it is. Learning in our automatic car removes the stress of the clutch and gears, which is often the biggest source of anxiety. It allows you to focus all your attention on the road, building your confidence in steering, positioning, and hazard perception much more quickly.
